Tools Needed for a Beginner Stone Sculptor
Okay, so you want to learn how sculpt do you?
In order to know how to sculpt, you need to first know the variety of carving tools that are available to use. Most of the time, what you use to sculpt will be the same; however it is the size of your project that will determine the size and type of the tool to be used. Sculpting in stone in one form or another has been around for as long as the existence of man, the only difference, obviously, is the way the process as well as the tools used to do it have been refined.Check out this link here. Also, don’t go thinking that a stone is a stone because it is most definitely not. Sculpting, like any other medium is a matter of preference. Marble, although very popular to work with, is also a very hard stone to work with. As a beginner sculptor, I would recommend working with a softer stone such as soap stone, limestone, or calcite at first in order to get use to the feel of both the tool and the stone itself.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED
The tools used to carve stone are actually a bit like those used on an archeological dig. There are chisels, mallets, hammers, and brushes in various sizes that are meant to be used for different areas on the sculpture. For example, toothed chisels are used to create texture, like hair, on a smooth surface, while the smooth chisel is used for making rough surfaces smoother in the process of creating the actual form. There are also specialty chisels for creating other details, and pointed chisels for creating things like facial features on humans or other animals. For more compact sculpting projects, there are smaller versions of these same tools available also.
